2018 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2018 Honda CR-V

2018 Volkswagen Atlas vs. 2018 Honda CR-V

It just can’t be overstated; the crossover SUV class of the global automotive industry is the most competitive of them all. Volkswagen has positioned the new Atlas to quickly rise above the competition. Just to help prospective Spitzer VW customers get ahead of the dense research that buying a new vehicle requires, the dealership has put together a snapshot comparing the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas vs. 2018 Honda CR-V. Make no mistake, the CR-V is one of the strongest models in the segment. However, the team who designed and built the Atlas ensured that it would specifically appeal to American buyers. The 2018 Atlas is able to outperform the current model of the Honda CR-V in the important metrics of performance, cargo volume and towing capacity.

Right from the jump, it’s pretty clear that the 2018 VW Atlas has more to offer customers compared to its Honda rival. Volkswagen gave the new Atlas the dimensions to allow options for up to three rows of seats for a maximum passenger capacity of seven. On the other side of the equation is the 2018 Honda CR-V which doesn’t offer a third row of seating and tops out at just five passengers. Additionally, the new Atlas offers easy passenger access to the third row. A similar disparity can be found when comparing the two crossover SUVs’ interior cargo volume. When owners properly configure the seats inside of the 2018 Atlas, they will have nearly 97 cubic-feet to work with. Honda, owners, on the other hand, will find a maximum cargo volume of 75.8 cubic-feet on hand.

Performance Specs

Taking a quick glance at the performance specifications of the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas and 2018 Honda CR-V, it would be a mistake to think the two crossovers are on equal footing based on the powertrains. The standard powertrain setup for the 2018 Atlas consists of a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Honda CR-V owners have a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine in their crossover SUV that is attached to a continuously variable transmission. This might not seem like a big deal until the power output is examined. The base version of the Atlas will make more than 230 horsepower with the CR-V making fewer than 185 horsepower. Atlas owners also have the option of choosing a V-6 engine.
