2021 Tiguan Active Control Drive Modes

A Dynamic and Agile Compact SUV

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is an agile compact SUV with plenty of features that offer a dynamic and comfortable drive. With an optional third-row seat, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan also has plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with front-wheel drive, but 4Motion all-wheel drive is available. And with 4Motion comes the exciting Active Control Drive Modes.

For over 100 years, the Spitzer Volkswagen family has helped drivers in Amherst find their ideal vehicles. Our professional staff would like to show you all the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has to offer inside and under the hood. We’re certain you’ll like what you see.

What is Active Control?

Active Control is available on the 4Motion system, and it maintains traction as it engages before the wheels spin. This advanced control function helps with challenging driving conditions. On a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan equipped with Active Control, 4Motion relies only on the front wheels when coasting or with a low load. But, once necessary, the rear wheels engage through the center differential and an electro-hydraulic oil pump.

Active Control also gives drivers the choice of different settings: Onroad, Snow, Offroad, and Custom Offroad. The profiles adjust the engine timing, transmission, steering, traction control, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Drivers use a knob and push-button to change the mode on the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan. A menu on the infotainment screen confirms which mode is engaged.

Defaulting to Onroad Mode

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan defaults to Onroad Mode, which changes the distribution of power between the two axles. Drivers should remain in this mode in normal driving conditions. It is also advised to use this mode when roads are wet but not icy or snow-covered.

Using Snow Mode For Safe Driving in Slippery Conditions

When road conditions become slippery, Snow Mode is designed to reduce excessive wheelspin. The mode also upshifts the transmission to improve traction in snowy and icy conditions. On the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan, Snow Mode uses the accelerator pedal, wheel-speed sensors, and the Traction Control System to adjust power from the engine when slipping occurs on the roads. While driving through a curve, the sensors adjust differently than they do on straightaways for safety purposes.

Safety with Offroad and Custom Offroad Mode

The other two modes – Offroad and Custom Offroad – are similar to Snow Mode, but with more manual control through the Tiptronic® transmission. Adaptive Cruise Control continues to work in this mode, and so does Hill Descent Control, which activates at slow speeds when a hill has a gradient over 10 percent. These modes also have a unique Offroad ABS setting that locks up the brakes for a quick moment, so material builds up in front of the tires to encourage braking. In Custom Offroad, the driver can adjust the settings.
