How the 2027 Atlas Differs from the 2026 Atlas

The 2027 model begins the Atlas’s much-anticipated second generation. Here’s what changed compared with the 2026 Atlas:

  • More power: 282 hp, up 13 hp from the 2026 model’s 269 hp (torque is 258 lb-ft vs. 273 lb-ft previously)
  • Better fuel economy: EPA ratings improve by up to 2 mpg for both FWD and AWD versions
  • All-new exterior: new sheet metal, animated LED lighting, and an illuminated light bar and logos on most trims
  • Redesigned interior: real wood trim and ambient lighting are now standard on every trim, with available Nappa leather
  • Column-mounted gear selector: the shifter moves to the steering column, freeing space for a larger center console
  • Bigger standard screen: a 12.9-inch touchscreen on the base SE, with a new Driver Experience Dial for volume, drive modes, and cabin “Atmospheres”
  • More standard equipment: power liftgate, rear sunshades, dual wireless charging, and front/rear parking sensors on every Atlas
  • Added safety: a new front-center airbag brings the total to seven, and Emergency Assist can now guide the SUV to the roadside in a medical emergency
  • Slightly larger footprint: about one inch longer, with interior space and third-row room preserved
  • Simplified lineup: four trims, with R-Line styling now standard on both SEL models
  • Price: the base SE starts about $2,350 higher than the 2026 SE, offset by the added standard features

2027 Volkswagen Atlas FAQs

Does the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas have third-row seating?

Yes. Every 2027 Atlas is a three-row SUV with seating for seven, using a sliding 60/40 second-row bench and a 50/50 split third row. Available second-row captain’s chairs ($695) reduce seating to six and add a walkway to the third row. Volkswagen kept the interior dimensions of the previous Atlas, which was known for one of the most adult-friendly third rows in its class.

How much does the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas cost?

The 2027 Atlas starts at $41,610 MSRP for the SE with front-wheel drive and $43,610 with 4Motion AWD. The SE with Technology starts at $45,610, the SEL R-Line at $52,110, and the top SEL Premium R-Line at $56,610. A $1,525 destination charge applies to all trims. Contact Spitzer Volkswagen Amherst for current pricing and offers.

What engine and gas mileage does the 2027 Atlas have?

All 2027 Atlas trims use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. EPA estimates are 22 city / 29 highway / 25 combined mpg with front-wheel drive and 20 / 27 / 23 mpg with 4Motion all-wheel drive.

How much can the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas tow?

The Atlas SE is rated to tow 2,000 pounds. The SE with Technology, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line tow up to 5,000 pounds with a braked trailer and include a factory-installed trailer hitch. A third-party trailer brake controller is required for the maximum rating.

Is all-wheel drive standard on the 2027 Atlas?

4Motion all-wheel drive is standard on the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line. On the SE and SE with Technology, it is a $2,000 option over front-wheel drive. Many Northeast Ohio drivers choose AWD for added traction in snow and rain.

Is there a 2027 Volkswagen Atlas hybrid?

No. The 2027 Atlas launches with a gas-only turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Volkswagen has said a hybrid version is planned for the Atlas’s future mid-cycle refresh, but it has not announced timing.
