What We Know About the ID.Buzz

The Return of the Iconic Microbus

2024 will be the year of the ID.Buzz, as the iconic VW Microbus returns to the Volkswagen lineup as a modern electric vehicle. The VW Bus name even gets a futuristic rebranding as a Buzz. The stubby shape of the ID Buzz van provides a spacious interior for drivers who need flexible seating for up to seven passengers. While the nostalgia is thick on the Volkswagen ID.Buzz microbus, the electric van is a ride into the future with high-tech safety and infotainment features.

Powering the ID.Buzz

The European model of the Volkswagen ID Buzz electric van has a 77-kWh battery pack, and the automaker is expected to put a larger battery in the American version to deliver about 260 miles of all-electric range. Whatever battery ends up in the VW ID Buzz passenger version, it should charge from 5 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes at a DC Fast Charging station. The automaker is working on plug-and-pay technology that takes away the need for an app or payment card to activate a public charging station.

Drivers will be able to choose a rear- or all-wheel-drive configuration with electric motors on the rear axle or both axles. The American model will have a long wheelbase. Drivers who choose the rear-mounted configuration can expect to see 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque from the ID.Buzz engine. The all-wheel-drive dual-motor models will create about 295 horsepower, with a driving experience similar to the ID.4 SUVs.

Unique Styling and Tech Features

The quirky electric van will be loaded with high-tech features. The ID.Buzz is expected to have a standard 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Drivers can choose an optional 12.0-inch touchscreen with more entertainment features. Volkswagen has hinted toward an optional rear-seat entertainment system in the family-friendly Buzz.

Styling features will include unexpected upholstery and dash color choices, like the energetic orange and bright white in the preview models. Like the Microbus from decades past, the ID.Buzz will have configurable interiors with up to three rows of seats, a removable center console, and an adjustable load floor for extra cargo space. Drivers will be able to choose optional massaging front seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and fun ambient lighting technology. Even the flat-bottom steering wheel is a new
